'Tail of the Dragon' claims 5th life this year
Posted: Oct 06, 2009 11:52 AM EDT

MARYVILLE (AP) -- The Tennessee Highway Patrol says the curvy stretch of U.S. 129 that crosses the Tennessee-North Carolina border known as the "Tail of the Dragon" has claimed a fifth victim this year.

Jesse Matthew Tremaine, 49, of Lenoir City, died Saturday from injuries in an Aug. 13 motorcycle accident.

Trooper James Dalton told The Daily Times that Tremaine entered a curve known as "Gravity Cavity" too fast, landed face down and never regained consciousness. He died at a hospice in Knoxville.

The 11-mile, 318-curve Dragon attracts motorcycle riders from around the world.

Although most of the road is in Tennessee, two North Carolina counties are negotiating over which will have responsibility for medical emergencies on the route.

Have always wanted to go just to say I went....after riding sportbikes and with some sportbike people I changed my mind about going there....I'm actually suprised it's only at 5.....it seemed every time I'd go out with these guys someone went down....so needless....hopefully others can learn from the mistakes of a few and can ride safe.

RIP and hopefully there are no more...
